I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.
Having spent 35 plus years in the Information Technology sector providing products and services to both Federal and State departments and agencies, I can say with confidence and authority that nothing takes the place of good customer service. I recently found a good definition on the Web that goes like this: “Customer service is the service or care that a consumer receives before, during and after a purchase. It’s one of the factors that come into play when a consumer determines value for the items or services they purchase.” Of course, I have a broader definition of Good Customer Service which includes more than the consumer and the sale.Good service must permeate throughout the life-cycle of the transaction from seller to buyer.
Good Service begins with the leadership of the business that produces the products or services, and who establish and strictly operate under standards and practices that are fairly and consistently applied throughout their organization. It then moves to their prospects or customers providing presales service before the purchase; thereafter, good operations service to both their employees and their customer during the life-cycle of the sale; then finally, good sales closure and transition services after the completion of the sale. Good customer service practiced by the seller, to its own employees, to the customer and after delivery of the product or service is not only a good business practice but also essential for the long term health and survival of all businesses, no matter the industry or location.
